Yellow Label Podcast

Yellow Label Podcast

Yellow Label Podcast

Inspired by a thread on Soul Source, I had a look in a 200 box for records with yellow labels. I came up with over 25!

Its not the first time I’ve heard of this fixation with yellow labels, there seems to be a few people afflicted with it. Why not blue? or red?

Anyway, here it is:

Northern Soul Floor Fillers No 1 Podcast

After my last podcast where I dusted off a few LPs and selected tracks only on LP, I thought perhaps something less obscure would fit the bill for this week’s podcast.

So I dusted off my playbox, and reached for the back left where I keep those records that always do the job when you need them to. I doubt there is anything new to anybody’s ears in this bunch but if you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together it was worth the time spent.

Now the reords in my play box are not always in the best of nick as I’m not a collector that insists on perfect condition – I’m happy if they play OK (and this usually makes them cheaper too!). So I’m not going to apologise for the odd pop and click, just think of it as adding that authentic vinyl only atmosphere.

Motown LP Only Tracks Podcast

Inspired by my good friend Jo Wallace’s brilliant series of Soul Satisfaction Motown compilation CD’s and spurred on by her exhortations for me to love my records more this year, I decided to fish out My motown LPs and put a podcast together.

Rather than go for a run of well known hits, I’ve decided to include LP only tracks; i.e. those that didn’t see a 45 release but maybe should have done. Quite how “What More Can A Boy Ask For” remained unissued is a mystery to me.

A good few of these have been played out at soul nights so will be familiar to some of you but I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Track List:

  • The Temptations – Hey Girl – Cloud Nine LP
  • Gladys Knight & The Pips – He’s My Kind Of Fellow – Everybody Needs Love LP
  • Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – My Baby Changes Like the Weather – Going To A Go-Go LP
  • Chuck Jackson – Ain’t No Sun – Arrives LP
  • The Monitors – Share A Little Love With Me – Greetings LP
  • Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – Soulful Shack – Make It Happen LP
  • The Isley Brothers – My Love Is Your Love – Tamla Motown Presents MFP LP
  • The Spinners – What More Could A Boy Ask For – From The Vaults LP
  • Stevie Wonder – Love A Go Go – Up-Tight LP
  • Four Tops – Tea House In China Town – Four Tops LP

I hope I’m right on all these! I’m pretty sure they are LP only but if not please add a comment as nobody is infallible.

Let me know if you liked it!

Some Oddball Records

To celebrate the resuscitation of my blog I’ve put together a new podcast of some of the odder records that I bought (mostly) in 2009.

I’ve developed a liking for popcorn and due to the ludicrous price that some Northern Soul records fetch on ebay, I’ve been adding quite a few popcorn and other oddball records to my collection.

The nice thing about odd records is that they are in the main quite cheap! Even the Nat Wright which I’ve seen advertised for up to £100 only cost me £7 (including postage!), it was hidden away on a japanese site in listings of records from boxes in storage. Thank you google!

Anyway, here it is in all its glory, track list follows with a brief comment on each record. Enjoy.

Tracklist:

  • Jocko – Blast Off To Love – Wand — Great Googa Mooga!
  • Johnny Rivers – Secret Agent Man – UK Liberty — Just a fantastic tune!
  • The Playmates – The Day I Died – Roulette — A popcorn classic that is so bad it is good! What lyrics!
  • Jimmy Ricks – Daddy Rollin’ Stone — Mean moody R&B, Who’s The Daddy?
  • Candy Reed – Give Me Love – Vanguard — One of the best records I bought last year. In my playbox.
  • Willie Jones – Comin Back To You – Storm Records — Early Detroit, this may well be dog rare.
  • Chyvonne Scott – I’m Moving On – Alto — Had to buy a stack of 20 records to get this cheap, hidden away on ebay. Yippee!
  • Ernie Sheldon – And A Man – Columbia — Mysoginist record of the week? Lyrics from a different era that sound faintly creepy today.
  • Ritchie Adams – Pakistan – Imperial — Just terrible! But compulsive all the same. The duet at the end ruins what could have been great.
  • Nat Wright – Run, Sonny, Run, – Petal — Short, sweet and absolutely brilliant.

Hope that was entertaining, might do a Motown one next.

Detroit Soul Podcast – Episode 1

I’ve been meaning to put together a few podcasts for some time as it is a fairly easy thing to do with the right tools. So after spending yesterday tiring myself out with some emergency plumbing, I thought I’d have a rest today and play some records.

The result is the first episode in what will become a series of Detroit Northern Soul podcasts. It will become a series because I can only fit around a dozen tunes in each and ended up sitting surrounded by records when putting this one together as there are so many Detroit soul records to choose from.

In this podcast I’ve deliberately not included any Motown tracks as I feel Motown hogs the limelight a bit (for obvious reasons) and a lot of the other records are just as good, if not better, but didn’t get the same exposure. I’ll put a couple of Motown tracks in the next one though.

  • Rufus Wonder & The Additions – Under The Moon – Lando 181
  • Falcons – Love Look In Her Eyes – Big Wheel 1971
  • The Fabulous Peps – My Love Looks Good On You – D-Town 219

R&B Podcast – Part 2

The second part of this podcast

If your idea of the best in Northern Soul music is “Al Wilson – The Snake” then look away now! No disrespect to “The Snake” really, it’s a good tune in its own right but if I never hear it again it will be too soon.

This podcast is the second part of a longer podcast I put together from the sort of music I am collecting and listening to at the moment. You may not agree that it constitutes Northern Soul in the strictest sense but it does make for good listening on your ipod.

Stumbling On

Not had a lot of time to do anything much with this blog, its still sitting aimlessly in cyberspace not linked to anything.

I think I’ll try and integrate it into my website so that I can ramble on here and highlight records, tunes, review CDs and that sort of thing and it will be viewable from my web site http://www.paulsrecords.com/.

That should keep me busy for today.
