Gay Jamison – Stay Another Day – Turntable 714

Surfing round some Belgian popcorn sites listening to tracks, my jaw hit the ground when I heard this one. An absolutely awesome, haunting mid-tempo tune.

Obviously I’d never heard it before and in my ignorance knew nothing about it. Knowing my unfailing ability to go for expensive records I reluctantly reached foe JM’s guide to see what the damage would be. Oh dear! He books it at £200 and also has it in his “Rarest of the Rare” section of his web site. I had a quick search on eBay with no results and without much expectation I saved the search.

Less than a week later one came up, I set up a snipe on it, crossed my fingers and waited. A week later it was mine! and for the princely sum of only $49! I would grade it about VG+ as although very shiny it does have a couple of marks that cause clicks every so often, the label is a bit marked too. But at $49 – who cares? I think my snipe was about 3 times that.

Anyway you are probably wanting to hear this stunning piece of music so here it is:

From the very little information I could find it is possible that Gay Jamison is actually the Gladys that recorded on the O-Gee Records Label. The writing credits for that tune (Love) have the same name as one of those on this tune – O. D. Jamison – so there may be some truth in this.

It seems a really tough one to pick up and if you want a mint one I reckon its going to cost you £150 to £200. They don’t seem to come up too often though and if the big dealers get their hands on one they also slap a hefty price on it. So if you see one in a sales box- don’t hesitate!

Some Oddball Records

To celebrate the resuscitation of my blog I’ve put together a new podcast of some of the odder records that I bought (mostly) in 2009.

I’ve developed a liking for popcorn and due to the ludicrous price that some Northern Soul records fetch on ebay, I’ve been adding quite a few popcorn and other oddball records to my collection.

The nice thing about odd records is that they are in the main quite cheap! Even the Nat Wright which I’ve seen advertised for up to £100 only cost me £7 (including postage!), it was hidden away on a japanese site in listings of records from boxes in storage. Thank you google!

Anyway, here it is in all its glory, track list follows with a brief comment on each record. Enjoy.

Tracklist:

  • Jocko – Blast Off To Love – Wand — Great Googa Mooga!
  • Johnny Rivers – Secret Agent Man – UK Liberty — Just a fantastic tune!
  • The Playmates – The Day I Died – Roulette — A popcorn classic that is so bad it is good! What lyrics!
  • Jimmy Ricks – Daddy Rollin’ Stone — Mean moody R&B, Who’s The Daddy?
  • Candy Reed – Give Me Love – Vanguard — One of the best records I bought last year. In my playbox.
  • Willie Jones – Comin Back To You – Storm Records — Early Detroit, this may well be dog rare.
  • Chyvonne Scott – I’m Moving On – Alto — Had to buy a stack of 20 records to get this cheap, hidden away on ebay. Yippee!
  • Ernie Sheldon – And A Man – Columbia — Mysoginist record of the week? Lyrics from a different era that sound faintly creepy today.
  • Ritchie Adams – Pakistan – Imperial — Just terrible! But compulsive all the same. The duet at the end ruins what could have been great.
  • Nat Wright – Run, Sonny, Run, – Petal — Short, sweet and absolutely brilliant.

Hope that was entertaining, might do a Motown one next.
